Research Methodologies

Research methodology is a way of explaining how a researcher intends to carry out their research. It's a logical, systematic plan to resolve a research problem. A methodology details a researcher's approach to the research to ensure reliable, valid results that address their aims and objectives.

There are two main categories of research methods: qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods. Quantitative research methods involve using numbers to measure data. Researchers can use statistical analysis to find connections and meaning in the data³. Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research.

Each type of research method has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, quantitative research allows for larger sample sizes, enables thorough analysis of the findings, and helps draw broader conclusions about your target audience². However, it may appear artificial and regulated since the researcher may be unable to conduct the research in the subjects’ natural environments². On the other hand, qualitative research is comprehensive as a respondent has the liberty to dive deep into explanations and follow-ups that allow researchers to identify positives and fallouts. However, analyzing qualitative information is a meticulous activity that requires careful attention to detail while listing key takeaways from individual responses.
